The Trans-Pacific partnership (TTP) is a trade agreement among twelve Pacific Rim countries signed on 4 February 2016 in Auckland, New Zealand, after seven years of negotiations. The AOA requested that the Minister for Trade and Investment establish an Olive Oil Working Group, as allowed for under Chapter eight (Technical Barriers to Trade), tasked to harmonize olive oil standards, establish a uniform olive oil grade standard, simplify customs procedures and harmonise labelling and packaging requirements among the twelve TPP member countries. The Minister has advised that once the Agreement has been ratified, the AOA will have the opportunity to review and comment on any new proposals for technical regulations. This will be an important step in ensuring that the views of the Australian Olive Industry are heard and that we have input into any technical issues that affect trade. We’ll update in Friday Olive Extracts as the process progresses.
