Coptetion2016

The Australian National EVOO Committee was assembled earlier this year to look at how the National Competition could be improved. The Committee provided a number of suggestions to the AOA Board, many of which, were approved.

The AOA Board would like to thank all our wonderful judges who were able to be part of the Committee. Thanks also to our Head Judge Shane Cummins for initiating this idea.

Beneficial Changes are:

  • We have removed the condition that limited how many exhibits could be entered by one single entity. Now you can enter as many EVOO’s as you like.
  • To bring The Australian National Competition into line with other Shows, from this year onwards entrants will be asked to send in their test results with their exhibits. You will need to ensure that the batch number quoted on the test results matches with the batch number on your exhibit.
  • To keep the costs down for Exhibitors, The Show Steward only requires NIR test results for Free Fatty Acid (FFA), Peroxide Value (PV), UV Absorption (UV) and Polyphenols (PPH).
  • Both NSW DPI and Modern Olives Laboratory have agreed to offer a special “NIR Show Package”. The AOA thanks both Claudia (MOLS) and Donna (NSW DPI) for all their assistance with achieving this result for Exhibitors.
  • In recognition of the outstanding varietal EVOO’s produced each year, we have included a new class called “SINGLE VARIETALS”. This class is divided into three sub-classes so that Spanish Varietals are entered into Class 5A and Italian Varietals are entered into Class 5B. All other varietals should be entered into 5C.
  • The Flavoured Classes have been re classified. Class 6 is now specifically reserved for Citrus Flavoured Olive Oil and Class 7 is reserved for all other Flavoured Olive Oil.
  • We have added in a NEW Class 19 to the Table Olive Competition for Australian Tapenades.
  • The Code Administrator has agreed that the comments made by judges can be used by COP Signatories as evidence that their oils have been organoleptically assessed.

We are really excited by the positive changes made to The Australian National EVOO & Table Olive Competition and impressed with the diligence and enthusiasm shown by our new EVOO Head Judge Shane Cummins. As part of the “continuous improvement” process, Shane has organised for a Judges Refresher Course to be run the day before Judging commences in Adelaide.

SPECIAL NOTE! All Gold winning oils will be ON DISPLAY at the Conference/Dinner for everyone to sample. Shane will be standing by to talk to producers about the winning oils and what made them stand out. Make sure you visit Shane at the Conference.
